The teardown has begun

I have high hopes for this car. High hopes can come with great disappointment if you try and rush a project of any size. This being probably the largest ( by far ) automotive feat I’ve ever attempted I’ll openly admit that I am scared ill lose the will to continue the project over time. I truly hope I won’t but only time will tell.

I’m starting this project by pulling the entire interior out of the car. The car had mold on the carpet and since my wife has had a run in with mold I wont take any chances of my project car sending any one back down that path. A car isn’t worth your health.

The interior is being stripped, the seats are being removed, the headliner, backing material, all panels, the dash… Well every thing until i’m down to bare metal.

Something I’ve noticed about these cars over the many times I’ve owned them is that they all… for lack of a better word smell the same. No clue what causes it but they do. They smell like an old man’s cologne that got applied really lightly and just never left.

A few days back (5/25/2021) I pulled the bulky parts of the interior out, namely the seats, carpet and headliner. Surprisingly I found out that this car had a 3/5 point harness and a roll cage installed at some point that had been removed. The bottom piece of the 5pt harness was still in the car and the previous owner only had it held in with a single bolt instead of all 3… guess it was for looks since safety obviously wasn’t the goal.

This doesnt worry me but it did explain where the mold came from… those holes were never plugged and by the looks of it no real care was taken when installing the cage. Now i’m really happy that I have a welder.

But before I get to weld on anything i want anything that could catch on fire to be removed from the car. I’ve got holes in the floor board that need patching, holes in the firewall that will go away since half the factory equipment that came with the car doesn’t exist any more and I want a clean engine bay to boot.

Cant weld on the firewall if there are things attached to it.
